Matchbox 75 Challenge cars are TYCO's response to Treasure Hunt models from Hot Wheels. 10,000 gold-painted Matchbox vehicles from the standard 1996 & 1997 range were included in this series. All models are available in the shades of light to dark gold with black interior and clear windows. There are no tempo or labeling on these models. They are packed in the standard blister card with a box inside the blister. Yes! the blister cards do look different so that collectors can easily spot the models. These models were originally released one per carton but when Mattel took over Tyco, they put a temporary stop on the distribution of this series. In 1998 the left over models were released and were distributed first through KB Toys and then through Toys R Us. All models were released individually in their blister cars except No 55 & 70 that are only available in 10-piece Starter Packs. Now the challenge part. Kids (or may be the collectors) can gather at least 5 different special edition vehicles, have their picture taken with them and send them over to Tyco. In late November 1997 there was a drawing in which 750 lucky people won a super limited edition model as a price. 04-D- '57 Chevy with rubber tires was the model limited to only 750 pieces.
