There are not many children in the world who at one time or another did not play with a Matchbox toy. Indeed, an often heard comment is: "I had that model when I was a child." Many of my friends and other non collectors of Matchbox toys get amazed by the asking price of some of the old/rare models. Most of the non collectors do not realize how big is the Matchbox Range. There are many categories that do not even show up in Toys R Us or other toy stores rather they are only available through mail orders. Superfast Wheel category is among one of them.
The Superfast Wheel models are basically miniatures that can run faster on the tracks without much friction. These models have suspension in the wheels and were attached with a thin axle rod. The term "Superfast" was originally introduced in 1969 by Lesney but gradually it changed from miniature to MB 1-75 series worldwide. These models are released with black wheels with many variations of the hub caps. Mostly with silver hub caps but some with black hub caps especially the Military models and recently some with gold hub caps.
The range of Superfast models is by far the biggest range in terms of models and variations within the models. In 1969 when Superfast range was first introduced majority of the models were still the models from the Regular Wheel range as the company was still using the same mold. These models are called "Transitional models." The current price of a mint transitional model is quite high these days.
Another very popular category in Superfast Wheels is the category of promotional models that are normally released in limited quantities and some of them are hard to find these days. Some of these promotional models are only released for a certain market.
Listed below are the different sub-categories for Superfast Wheel models.
