NAME ORIGIN As Spanish explorers moved north from Baja (Lower) California, the Mexican peninsula to the south, they named the land above the peninsula to the Alta "upper" California. The name was originally that of a treasure island in a Spanish romance, Las sergas de esplandian (1850), by Ordonez de Montalvo.
