NAME ORIGIN | Idaho is apparently a coined word, and was applied to Idaho Springs and Idaho County prior to being used for Idaho Territory in 1863. The name has no origin in any known Indian language, but there is at least one documented theory: it may have been coined by lobbyist-politician George M. Willing, who claimed the name came from an Indian word idahow, which is thought to mean "gem of the mountains"; this interpretation has a great many adherents. | ||
