LOCATION In the Great Lakes region of the United States, bordering Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Ontario (Canada) and Lake Erie.
NAME ORIGIN Named in 1805, apparently for Lake Michigan; itself named from an Indian word, possibly Chippewa Michigama "great lake," or possibly from mishi-maikin-nac "swimming turtle," descriptive of Mackinac Island. Early 18th Century maps of North America vary, some labeling present-day Lake Huron as Lake Michigan (and labeling the latter as Lake Illinois), but present naming practice is seen on maps regularly after 1757.
