NAME ORIGIN | Named in 1805, apparently for Lake Michigan; itself named from an Indian word, possibly Chippewa Michigama "great lake," or possibly from mishi-maikin-nac "swimming turtle," descriptive of Mackinac Island. Early 18th Century maps of North America vary, some labeling present-day Lake Huron as Lake Michigan (and labeling the latter as Lake Illinois), but present naming practice is seen on maps regularly after 1757. | ||
