LOCATION On the the central Atlantic coast of the United States, bordering South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia. One of the thirteen original English Coulonies.
NAME ORIGIN For Charles I of England, who called the territory of present-day North and South Carolina Carolana "land of Charles" in a land grant to Sir Robert Heath. The area had already been named Carolina in 1562 by French explorer Jean Ribaut to honor Charles IX, king of France. Officially named Carolina in the English Royal Charter of 1663.
