NAME ORIGIN | For Rhode Island in Narragansett Bay, which Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano, while navigating Narragansett Bay in 1524 in the service of France, is said to have named for its likeness to the Mediterranean isle of Rhodes off the coast of Turkey. It is the largest of several islands in the bay and was called "Aquidneck" by the Indians. In 1614 Dutch explorer Adriaen Block named an island in the bay Roodt Eylandt "Red Island" because of the red clay along the shore. Early English settlers used the name Aquidneck, but in 1644 the name was officially established by royal charter as Rhode Island. Since the settlements on the mainland along Narragansett Bay were known as the Providence Planatations, the full, official name of the state became "Rhode Island and Providence Planatations." | ||
