NAME ORIGIN | From French vert "Green" and mont "Mountain," originally applied to the Green Mountains east of Lake Champlain by French explorer Samuel de Champlain on his map of 1612. Dr. Thomas Young, a farmer of the Pennsylvania constitution and active in championing the cause of Vermont statehood, combined the words into Vermont in 1777. The region had previously been referred to as New Connecticut. | ||
