My name is Shabbir Malik. I am originally from Karachi - Pakistan but living in New York City since 1988. I got my MS in Statistics and Operations Research, with a concentration in Actuarial Science from New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business, in May 1996 with Beta Gamma Sigma award for my outstanding academic performance. I graduated in 1993 with a BS in Economics, again, from New York University Leonard N. Stern school of Business, where I earned the International Omicron Delta Epsilon award in the same year for my Scholastic Achievements. I also have a BS (honors) in Economics from the University of Karachi in 1987, where my average always remained among the top 2% of the class providing me the opportunity to earn the first position in the faculty of arts. I received a Gold Medal from the University of Karachi as well as from Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam for this achievement.
I worked full time as a "Budget Administrator" at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business's budget office until December 1997. With the Budget Manager, I was responsible for the budgeting of the entire Business School. I was responsible for preparing and analyzing monthly variance reports in order to project future expenses. At the end of my tenure I was appointed to work directly with the Associate Dean of Administration for doing the financial planning of the Stern School of business. I am also the in charge of the computing systems used in the Financial Management area. This includes Designing, modifying, updating and maintaining of our current database and all the spreadsheet files.
Then, I worked at American Express Corporate Services as a Business Performance Manager for over 14 months. I was responsible for analyzing the Corporate card business and Business Travel business in the Eastern Region which comprises of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Other responsibilities include tracking and reporting of customer relationship activities, coordinate tracking, strategic analysis and reporting which communicates performance against goals, provide and communicate competitor information. I also provide monthly reports to the Directors and Managers of Account development team about their respective portfolios. Plus there are other things I do to keep my customers happy (smile)
In January 1999 Y&R discovered my talent and made me an offer that I could not refused. I left American Express and started working for them. I worked at Young & Rubicam Advertising, for almost a year and a half. At that time Y&R was one of the top five advertising agencies in the world with offices all around the globe. I worked in their Corporate Finance department in New York as a Financial Analyst concentrating on the Asian region. My responsibilities included the monthly reporting to CFO, planning, forecasting and analyzing the P&L statements, Capital Expenditures, etc. After I left Y&R in summer of 2000 they could not handle the operations without me and merged with WPP (now world's largest advertising company) in October 2000. At that time the Y&R stock stopped trading in the Stock Market.
In summer 2000, I decided to look for a position that would perfectly fit my background. I found that perfect match with AXA Client Solutions. AXA is the largest French Insurance company that purchased "Equitable Life Insurance" in the late 1990's. I work for the Enterprise Governance Group. Our group is responsible for properly analyzing all the projects and make sure that they are strategically aligned with the company's strategies. My job involves process reengineering, planning, forecasting and work with the Office of the CFO to make sure that all the financials related to each project are correct. Continuous monitoring of all the projects is part of the job where we make sure that projects are still on track as projected at the beginning of the year. At this position I have been responsible for designing a cost benefit model that shows qualitative, as well as quantitative, values of a project. The model became so popular in the company that it is now being looked at for a possible adoption at the global level. This is a great company to work for I think I have a bright futre ahead of me with AXA
I also work with my friend, Ajay Arora, as his "Financial Analyst" and "Advertising Specialist" for his company Web Design House. This company was established by five friends at New York University in 1996 and since then it has grown tremendously. My part time responsibilities include keeping the accounts straight, advertising new clients' web sites and occasionally help with HTML coding. I really enjoy working at this job as it gives me the opportunity to learn new techniques with computing.
In sports, I like "Cricket" and American Football. Back in Pakistan I used to play cricket for my school and for a local club. In this country, I like to watch Football and I am a big fan of "New York Giants" (win or loss, I am with Giants.) In other sports I follow Tennis and sometimes Baseball. I am an unbeaten "Chess" player since 1987 (to tell you the truth I have not played since then. )
I spend my spare time with my "Matchbox Toys." I have a huge (over 9,000 models and over 100 play sets) collection of Matchbox toys and I consider myself very informative about the current items. Besides Matchbox I do have over 30 Lego Sets in my collection also. I also like to photograph buildings. Before I left Pakistan, I took about 6 rolls of pictures of all the famous buildings in Karachi. In the United States I have kept my picture taking hobby very active and took some very nice pictures ( at least that's what I think) of famous buildings and bridges. Please don't get confused, I am not a big architecture fan. I like historical buildings but to the extant of photograph them only.
